Spring, and the Cabin on Cow Creek

With the help of a four wheel drive, a mild winter and warm spring that has dwindled snow drifts and made the high Siskiyou jeep trails passable, I wind my way to the cabin on Cow Creek.

Thoreau would have liked this cabin for its remoteness, its alpine setting along the creek, and for the stories penciled on walls by 60 years of visitors.

Late May sun hammers the metal roof. The colors of wildflowers flare in the thin air. Deer rattle across the granite scree.

At the cabin on Cow Creek, spring moves through snowmelt and wildflowers and the scrambling of deer, toward the first of the fair-weather visitors.
