Spiders

I like spiders. In my home, no one is allowed to stamp on spiders or flush them into the sewer. Though black widows and brown recluses are relocated to new homes in the neighborhood, and though I sweep down webs to keep my spiders sleek and industrious, spiders in my home are protected critters.

In cultures around the world, spiders are symbols of good fortune. They offer protection from storms that might otherwise tear a home apart. They are weavers of destiny, and their webs represent an ordered universe: the sun at the center surrounded by its rays, a sort of cosmic hearth.

In my home, spiders are protected, and in return, spiders protect my home.
