Dragonflies

One afternoon I walk up Lower Table Rock through a buzzing cloud of dragonflies.

In Takelma mythology, this rock and nearby Upper Table Rock are two dragonfly brothers who traveled the Rogue River and made the world ready for the Indian people. At journey's end they turned into the two Table Rocks and became the center of the Takelma universe, the hearth of their home.

Now in this place I call home, this cloud of dragonflies buzzes the story alive, an echo from Mythtime to now.

Storyteller Jaime de Angulo wrote:

"A dragonfly came to me
With news from my home.
I lie in the afternoon,
Looking toward the hills."
