At the Crazy Bear Pow Wow

Late night at the Crazy Bear Pow Wow, the fire burns to coals. Elders from several tribes argue about how the world was made. A young girl sings a song about fancy dancing. Tales of coyotes and bears and eagles drift through the wood smoke. Drumming and singing carry the night toward morning.

This pow wow could be any Indian gathering, any century. The only clocks are the ancient travels of the sun and moon, the dances of the stars and planets, the telling of stories, the drum beat of the earth.

At the Crazy Bear Pow Wow, as folks leave the dance ring and head toward sleep, the sun rises like a newly-lit fire.
