Picture this: July 4, 1054 in the high desert of northeast California. At sunrise the stars flicker out. Except one. All day, under the desert sun, this lone stars flares near the curve of the moon. For more than 300 days natives watch the Supernova ... the beginning of what we now call the Crab Nebula. The event was documented at several rock writing sites in the American west, including here near Tule Lake.
