The sun rose over Koomookumpts' Bed, turning the snow on Mount Shasta orange, spilling into ravines on the eastern ridge. These ravines were the ones Koomookumpts, the Modoc creator, carved with his fingernails so water flowed down the mountains and filled rivers and lakes.
