Takelma Language Project

About the Project

For centuries, the Takelma language was spoken by native people in the Rogue River region of southern Oregon. The language is currently listed as extinct. The Takelma Language Project is an effort to bring back the language, and along with it, an appreciation and understanding of the rich culture of the Takelma people. This project has the full support of Agnes Baker-Pilgrim (Taowhywee), Takelma elder and great-niece of Frances Johnson (Gwisgwashan), the last fluent speaker of the language.

The Takelma Language Project is in three phases....

Phase One: Publication of Yawìth Takélma ... Talking Takelma. This is an introduction to the Takelma language and a handbook for learning the language for middle school age and older. Includes language lessons as well as insights into Takelma culture, mythology, folklore and world view.

Phase Two: Publication of a Takelma/English, English/Takelma dictionary.

Phase Three: Publication of a learning edition of Takelma myths.

These web pages contain more information about the project. Enjoy!
